“Massage Therapy” means the health profession in which a person provides, for the purposes of developing, maintaining, rehabilitating or augmenting physical function, or relieving pain or promoting health, the services of (a.) assessment of soft tissue and joints of the body, and (b.) treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction, injury, pain and disorders of soft tissue and joints of the body by manipulation, mobilization and other manual methods.

The Registered Massage Therapy Association of BC defines massage therapy as the treatment and prevention of dysfunction, injury, pain and physical disorders of the soft tissues and joints by manual and physical methods to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function to relieve pain and promote health.

"Lymphedema" is defined as an abnormal accumulation of tissue proteins with edema (swelling) and chronic inflammation, caused by deficiency, damage or blockage of lymphatic vessels.

A practitioner must have a practice in a regulated medical field such as a Registered Nurse, Physiotherapist, Registered Massage Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or Medical Doctor. They must have taken a minimum or 135 hours of Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) training and that training must be recognized by the Canadian Lymphedema Framework as a school or program that adheres to the Lymphedema Association of North America's standards. Combined Decongestive Therapy "Best Practices" can be found on the International Lymphedema Framework's website (lympho.org) under publications.

Massage therapists manipulate the body’s soft tissues – muscles, tendons, connective tissues, joints and ligaments – to achieve results. Using touch, therapists:

relieve pain,
help heal injuries,
improve circulation,
increase relaxation,
relieve stress,
reduce muscular tension,
improve lymphatic drainage, and
help improve the general wellness of clients.

Massage therapy’s beneficial effect on the body and its ability to optimize health and well-being derives from its acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems.

Massage therapy can be used to develop, maintain and improve physical function and it can relieve or prevent physical dysfunction and pain and the impact of stress on the body. It can be employed to treat both acute and chronic conditions, and it is also effective as a preventive strategy.

I am a graduate of OVCMT (Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy) in Vernon, BC and am a few years into my journey as a Registered Massage Therapist. Taking the massage therapy program was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I genuinely love what I do, and couldn’t be more excited to be able to assist people in their journey to health and wellness. During my time at OVCMT I was able to work with clients with many different concerns and/or conditions, including post-cancer, post-surgery/injury, neurological/systemic conditions, sports, maternity, assisted living, and many more. I enjoyed each outreach and at this time do not have a clinical focus, however I do especially enjoy working with clients with neurological conditions, PTSD, post-surgical and the geriatric population.

My tentative plans for future development includes pre-post natal care and women’s health. At this time my treatment style includes a combination of mostly Swedish massage, myofascial release, trigger point release, deep tissue, joint play, and passive range of motion. I believe in providing clients with tools they can use at home to be actively involved in their rehabilitation through stretches, strengthening exercises, hydrotherapy and/or modifications to their everyday life.

I look forward to starting this journey with Kamloops Massage Matters and am thankful to all those who have supported me along the way.

I graduated from OVCMT with a diploma of Massage Therapy in 2001. Soon after, I returned to my home town of 100 Mile House where I worked as the Rehabilitation Assistant in the Physiotherapy department within the 100 Mile House Hospital and practiced Massage Therapy from my home based clinic.

In July 2014, I moved to Kamloops with my husband and my 3 busy sons. I work out of Kamloops Massage Matters with an area of special interest in pregnancy massage and post-natal massage. I continue to work with a multidimensional clientele and have gained much experience with treating scar tissues, surgical rehabilitation, and stress tension. Beyond standard massage schooling, I continue to upgrade my education in interesting and inspiring techniques which focus on gentle methods of treating conditions and pathologies. Among my favorites are muscle energy, myofascial, and joint mobilizations.

I enjoy spending time with my family exploring the city and all it has to offer. In the winter, we can usually be found at the hockey rink and when we are not busy with hockey, we like to spend time together as a family at Sun Peaks. In the warmer months, we like to spend time boating, swimming and camping. So far, we are loving life in Kamloops and look forward to many more exciting years.
